As a lover of Kurtz's Deryni series, I expected a good story with both whimsical and believable storyline components. I was not disappointed in the least. She has used all the tricks perfected in her other works. Kurtz weaves a wonderful tale about the gargoyles, guards and watchers left to protect foolish people from the evils that lurk right around the corner in the dark. Or maybe they are in the dark spot at the head of the stairs. Or. .. .

'Tis a bitter cold late December night in Dublin when the convocation of gargoyles meet to discuss how to deal with the rumblings they have heard that ancient evil is returning. Paddy, the gargoyle who takes care of St. Patrick's Cathedral must choose a champion from modern day to help an ancient Crusader re-lock the door the evil is trying to open so it can come to our times.
