Hawk Publishing, 2002, 294 pps.
Kaycee Miller, a psychologist specializing in handwriting analysis, has had to face tragedy in her life in recent years. Her parents die. Her sister Niki, a downhill skier and an artist allowed a friend to convince her to try drugs “just one time” and the drug brought on a stroke and Niki is no longer able to walk. Now Kaycee is faced with a disease that will cause her to eventually lose her eyesight.
Kaycee interviews with a parole board in New Mexico where her sister resides and during this interview is given handwriting of a prisoner as a test. She feels overwhelming evil while trying to do the analysis. When she gives her conclusion, the board admits that this prisoner has already been released from prison.
On Kaycee’s return trip to Oklahoma from her sister’s residence in New Mexico she almost runs down a man and his dog at the side of the road. When she stops her car and goes back to check she finds out that the man she has almost run down is Max Masterson and his dog Stagga is a rescue dog. Max also lives close to her residence in Oklahoma.
In the days to come she will be eternally grateful that this incident happened because Max and Stagga stand beside her while she is stalked by Willy Thornton, the man the New Mexico prison system had turned loose on society. Willy has already murdered a friend that attempted to help him recover his loot from a robbery. Now he has kidnapped his little daughter in order to make her crawl into tunnels in a cave to get the treasure. Willy stops at the same motel as Kaycee and his daughter seeks Kaycee’s help in escaping.
Willy hides his daughter and seeks revenge on Kaycee for disrupting his plans. Willy will allow no one to stand in his way and even Niki is made a part of the vendetta.
Max’s rescue team, Kaycee and Niki’s courage, all come together to make an exciting and interesting story. I look forward to reading future books by Jodie Larsen.
