When Charlie Bowen, sole-practitioner of a San Francisco law office, disappears, something has to be done about his client list. When a sole-practitioner like Charlie dies and he has not made any provision for his open cases, they fall to the State Bar Association to distribute to other attorneys. Charlie cannot be proven dead. But someone needs to deal with his caseload.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Oscar Thomasino asks our old, dear friend, Dismas Hardy, to help out with Charlie's caseload as a favor to the court. Sixty boxes of paperwork - with one client taking up the first 30 boxes! And Dismas Hardy becomes the attorney-of-record for one Evan Scholler - former police officer and National Guard soldier in Iraq - accused of killing a private civilian security contractor. From there, the case becomes even more complicated and tied in to current headlines - or what should BE headlines across the country.

BETRAYAL moves from the streets of Iraq to the courtrooms and streets of San Francisco and should bring up a lot of questions regarding the relationships between the US government and its private contractors. An intense, thought-provoking, continuation of the Dismas Hardy series that beat even my expectations! Score another big one for one of my favorite authors, John Lescroart!
