Dismas Hardy, attorney-at-law, and Lt. Abe Glitsky of the SFPD return. Unfortunately, due to a near-fatal gunshot wound and long, complicated recovery, Lt. Giitsky is no longer assigned to homicide; instead, he has been assigned to payroll! When a close friend of his father's is murdered, Glistsy ends up on the wrong side of all the brass when he asks questions and is told to stay out of it.

Hardy, in the meantime, is quite happy with his growing family and law practice. One of his clients has become a personal friend, and John Holiday has been targeted as the chief suspect in the murder of Glitsky's father's friend, evidence to the contrary. All of this leads to Holiday becoming a fugitive, Hardy being tagged by the PD and people he thought were friends as a liar, and Glitsky being portrayed as a "bad" cop.

John Lescroart has done it again - provided me with a new view of a city I love and spun a story that unfortunately rings incredibly believable. The twists, turns, and convolutions kept me reading long past my bedtime and on to the rising sun. There is just enough humor between the Hardy and Glitsky families to lighten the tension where it is needed [chainsaws, anyone?] and a chilling ending that will leave your heart pumping. A great read!
