Almost ten years ago, Louis Baker was sent to prison. Housed at San Quentin, he has just been released on parole. Rusty Ingraham and Dismas Hardy are the two prosecutors he swore to kill when he got out. Ingraham warns Hardy that Baker is out, and they arrange signals for each other if he comes after either of them, so the other will know to watch his back.

Then Hardy finds Ingraham missing, blood all over his boat, and his girlfriend/client dead on the floor. Enter old friend Abe Glitsky, homicide detective, who has problems of his own, including the current state of affairs at SFPD in general and Homicide in particular. Hardy is adamant that Baker is running loose bent on revenge and that he is the next target. Glitsky isn't so sure. As the case progresses, several other potential suspects turn up to distract Glitsky from Baker, to Hardy's dismay.

I have to admit, I adore Lescroart's characters. I'm never disappointed with his writing or with the growth and changes in his protagonists. As usual, there are several sub-plots in the story that are almost as interesting as the mystery. Almost. In this 'chapter' of the life and times of Dismas Hardy, there are enough suspects and enough clues turning up to change the focus of Hardy and Glitsky's investigation to keep the final denouement in doubt.
