Jonathan Lethem

2003, Doubleday, 640 pages

THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE is a magical book. It is a Brooklyn story. A tale written with love, magnificent characters, and an epic scope. From the moment we meet the young boy, Dylan, Lethem draws us into his life. We care, we shake our head over his choices, we are saddened, and sometimes we see hope.

THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE is a book with a social conscience. From the gentrification of Brooklyn to prison life, Lethem explores a bevy of issues. With beautiful prose he forces us to give up our reader’s neutrality and look at the life Americans have created for themselves.

This is another read by an author who now goes on my must be read pile.
