Marisol Perez believes that escaping Mexico to work in the United States is the only hope she has for her future and that of her twelve-year old son Tino. Tino asked his mother what to do should anything go wrong on their attempt to reach California. Marisol states that he should call J. Atticus Payne. Tino knows that J. Atticus Payne was successful in representing a number of illegal immigrants that had been abandoned and left to die in the dessert.

J. Atticus Payne a/k/a Jimmy Payne wasn’t living the successful life Marisol and other hopeful immigrants imagined. Jimmy had suffered the tragedy of losing his son, Adam, and later his wife Sharon. Most recently, he had run into some trouble with the law. He was in really in no position to help himself, let alone anyone else but Tino didn’t know that.

Marisol and Tino were separated during their journey. Marisol eventually wound up with Simeon Rutledge, a wealthy grower and the biggest employer of farm workers in California. Rutledge had more uses for immigrants than just working the fields as Marisol soon found out.

Meanwhile Tino finally locates Jimmy. Jimmy reluctantly agrees to help Tino find his mother. The adventures of Jimmy and Tino on the road to locate Marisol make for an exciting story.
