Series: Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord # 1
Bantam, 2005

Steve Solomon is a lawyer representing mostly low-life types. Victoria Lord is from a privileged background, at least until her father took a dive off a 22 story building. When they meet in court -her as prosecutor, him as defense lawyer - sparks fly. He is all about winning, any way he can. Victoria wants to win too, but in a buttoned-up, rigid and proper to the last index card way.

Naturally they team up on a high profile murder case, her first. Steve is more experienced, but not with high profile cases. While they work the attraction grows. But she is about to be married in a few weeks.

Thatšs not Stevešs only problem. He has rescued his nephew from a horrible existence in a cult-like compound. Yet Family Services is determined to take the child, who is thriving with his Uncle Steve, away from him. And the DA and Family Services have teemed up to make life miserable. The characters are all well defined, but you will find the character of eleven-year-old Bobby endearing.

Levine has written a number of books in the Jake Lassiter series plus one standalone. This is the first in a new series, and I will be waiting for the next one, as well as checking out his earlier works.
