Series: Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord # 1

This lively and raunchy tale begins with a classic confrontation between opposites - an anxious perfectionist and a free-wheeling manipulator. Rookie lawyer Victoria Lord, engaged to a very suitable man, nevertheless wishes to establish herself as a trial lawyer rather than work at real estate law and avocado farming with her vegan husband-to-be. Unfortunately, her inexperience leaves her vulnerable to the courtroom antics of Steve Solomon, a struggling lawyer with a checkered background and an eccentric approach to everything from his personal life to the practice of his profession. The story careens through a series of crazy incidents culminating in not one but two dramatic confrontations in court. The parade of peculiar but hilarious characters may owe something to Hiassen - unless Florida really is home to some very strange people! - but have a life all their own. Some of the characters, particularly Victoria and Steve, gain added depth as their hidden insecurities and strengths are slowly revealed. I think Steve is the better- developed of the two main characters, but Victoria's conflict between safety and exitement rings true.

This book was an entertaining light read, with touches of both comedy and pathos.
