Doubleday, 2005, 292 pages

Jeff Lindsay's protagonist Dexter Morgan returns - this time participating in a police investigation into a series of extraordinarily gruesome murders in the Miami area. Although Dexter's day job is in the forensic side of police investigation, his foster sister Deborah, also a cop, draws him into the fray.

Readers of the first book will remember that as a sideline, Dexter is a serial killer, and his after hours activities are seriously curtailed by his assistance to his sister.

The investigation ends satisfactorily with the killer dispatched in fine style, but the real attraction of Lindsay's books is the light hearted comic style of the narrative, and Dexter's running commentary on his struggles to stay undetected as a sociopath living an upright seemingly law abiding life.

Lindsay skillfully makes this all work. A chuckle awaits on nearly every page, and readers will need to ignore the guilty pangs which follow. Serial killing, dismemberment and murder CAN be funny. If you don't believe me, get the book and read it!
