Class/Genre:   Mystery   Thriller   Serial Killer
Doubleday, 2007

In 2004, after I read DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER, Lindsay's first book featuring Dexter Morgan, I wrote: "Dexter is a fully realized character, a sociopath with no conscience, no normal sexual feelings, no real love for any other person. And yet - he has warm memories of his supportive foster father and a supportive relationship with his foster sister. And perhaps this is the key to why he is likable - he is aware of the differences between himself and other "normal" people. His comments on these differences provide the light humorous tone of the narrative."

Now we're up to the third entry in the series, and my appreciation hasn't waned. Lindsay manages to maintain the same tone of humor which intrigued me in the first book, while realistically portraying a serial killer as his protagonist. I do think, however, that this is one series that readers should try to start at the beginning. As I was reading DEEPLY DEVOTED DEXTER, the second in the series, I reacted with horror - Dexter's going to do WHAT? And I think I would spoil the fun if I told you what action he was contemplating. Yet as I read on, I found very good reasons why everything would be OK.

So clearly, the stage was set for the action in this book, and Dexter is moving forward with the next stage in his life. In his professional life as a blood spatter expert for the Miami police department, Dexter encounters the worst humankind has to offer, and he often moves on his own to get rid of the baddies he encounters. This satisfies his darkest side. But he suddenly finds himself adrift, without his "dark passenger" to guide him, and dreaming frightenly real dreams which seem to be drawing him into a monstrous encounter. He comes to the uncomfortable conclusion that he is now the hunted, not the hunter.

Against the backdrop of insane automobile traffic in greater Miami, with a hurricane approaching from the Atlantic, and with the two children of his girl friend gone missing, Dexter faces the entity which has been persuing him.
