India in the years following WWII - continuing tension in Kashmir, growing political upheaval in China, CIA agents posing as journalists and adventure travelers, an ugly brothel in New Dehli, and so on. Lots of atmosphere to plow through in this book!

Joanna Shaw's husband has left for northern India on what he plans as a short two day trip to follow a journalistic lead. When he doesn't return, Joanna sets out in search of him. Traveling with her are her young son, a young woman Joanna has rescued from life as a prostitute, and an Australian man, a good friend of her husband's.

As they near the high mountain passes between India and China, the former prostitute realizes they are close to her childhood home. The adventure continues for several years - every character coming to terms with various mysterious happenings.

Probably a good beach read - for those who like adventurous escapism!
