Claire Watkins is a female deputy sheriff in rural Wisconsin. After an elderly manšs death, his daughter asks Claire for help in preventing her stepmother Patty Jo from selling the farm. Although not the sheriffs department problem, Claire finds herself increasingly wary of Patty Jošs behavior, suspecting her of the rash of fires occurring in the area.

Logue writes a book that is a gentle study of family interactions and rural neighborliness. The author is familiar with Wisconsin seasons and country habits. The book is enjoyable and well written is spite of a weak ending. This is a series that may be best enjoyed by reading the books in order, to give a sense of the evolving family.
