"Sleeping Beauty" is a different take on a serial killer story. Instead of a straightforward, chase-the-serial-killer tale, this novel relates a series of flashbacks framed by the story of a book tour by an author of a book on the crimes. The complicated plot adds much interest to the story.

The plot is the strongest aspect of the novel. The writing style is somewhat plain and pedestrian and the characters are not really well-developed. Maxfield is the best-developed character, and even some of his actions, although necessary for the story, are implausible.

Overall, in spite of these limitations, this is a very readable novel, largely because of the suspense created by its structure. In addition, some passages, such as the courtroom scene, were more interesting than most of the narration.
