This is the latest in Margaret Maron's long-running Judge Deborah Knott mystery series. Knott is now engaged to detective Dwight Bryant, but in her opinion, it is not the love match that everyone else thinks it to be. So, when she gets the chance to go to the Blue Ridge Mountains to cover for another judge on vacation, she is only too keen to go. However, shortly after she arrives, she discovers that the serene Cedar Gap is not the quiet place she expected it to be. In fact, there is murder in the air.

In 'High Country Fall', Margaret Maron triumphs again. Her heroine is engaging and interesting, with dry humour and wit. Maron succeeds in recreating the atmosphere of small town USA which will be familiar to anyone who has experienced restrictive communities. The behaviour of the community that wants to inflict certain building rules and regulations has a distinctly realistic feel.

Essentially, 'High Country Fall' is a cozy mystery, but at times, the tone of the book can get dark. Murder is involved, but Maron offsets this with bouts of humour and characters such as Knott's nieces, who play only a small role but will make the reader smile. There are enough twists to keep readers interested and overall, this is another gripping and pleasant novel from Maron.
