Returning to Bugfest, Georgia isn’t a trip that Lilly Cleary, an attorney, in Sarasota, Florida, would ever willingly choose to do. When she receives a phone call that Willette Rose Cleary, her mother, has murdered a man Lilly returns to Bugfest.
Lilly arrives at her brother Dan’s home to find that her mother is in the local hospital and has been sedated to the point that she can’t communicate with anyone. Willette has been a recluse for sometime refusing to leave her home. It seems that a bill collector arrived at her house to collect for a freezer that shouldn’t have even been delivered and Willette shot him. Willette claimed the freezer was full of voodoo eggs.
It all sounds a bit strange but as the story progresses it gets even stranger. Lilly’s old friend from school Shalonda Rivers is sitting at the hospital watching over Willette. Shalonda is now married to Demetrious Dupree, the Police Chief of Bugfest.
Big Lonnie Ledbetter was back in town and now a County Commissioner. Lonnie had left town to establish a singing career but he had one hit song and that was Sweetheart Deal. Lonnie purchased Lilly’s grandmother’s home much to Lilly’s chagrin. She had begged Willette to sell it to her but it went to Lonnie instead. Now Lonnie has sold the house to Simon, the new administrator of the hospital.
Lilly is trying to put all the pieces together and feels that somehow there is a connection between the fact that a big developer is hoping to build a resort in Bugfest and the mystery surrounding the man Willette is accused of killing.
Lilly takes a while to unravel the entire mystery and not without a few mishaps in between. Pick up Sweetheart Deal and meet the residents of Bugfest. It is an enjoyable read.
