In France, Enzo Macleod is attempting to work his way through a number of unsolved cases detailed in Roger Raffin’s book. He had already solved one, and now is looking at the disappearance of wine critic Gil Petty. Petty’s body was found a year after he had gone missing, and now three years later, Macleod turns his forensic knowledge toward solving the case, hoping to raise funds for a new forensic department at the university where he is teaching.

Macleod comes with a lot of baggage. There is the wife and child he left behind in Scotland to marry a French woman who died giving birth to his second daughter, and a number of women since including Charlotte who he thinks he loves but who has managed to dodge a commitment. His student Nicole is helping him with his search but can cause more problems than she helps solve.

You will learn a lot about the process of winemaking in this book, as well as differences in law enforcement between France and other countries. Enzo’s method of smuggling soil samples into the US is sure to bring a smile to your face. Another fascinating mystery by Peter May.
