Archer Mayor
Class/Genre:   Mystery   Police Procedural
Series: Joe Gunther # 14
2003, Mysterious Press, 296 pages

It’s fall again and Archer Mayor and his cast of characters have returned to Vermont after last year’s successful trip to New York City in The Sniper’s Wife. GATEKEEPER opens with a bang. A very personal bang for Mayor’s long time readers. So politically volatile is this case that Joe Gunther, everyone’s favorite V.B.I. investigator, must enter the case on the defensive. Throw in an undercover operation that threatens to be exposed at every step along the way and you have Vermont Crime as only Mr. Mayor can write it.

This year’s book belongs to Sam and she is at the heart of every page with Joe watching her back. It’s a drug case. Can the team ebb the flow of drugs coming across the border or is the problem going to get worse? There are no easy answers and to Mayor’s credit he doesn’t try to give any.

GATEKEEPER is an entertaining addition to the Gunther series.
