This is a sort of standalone featuring one of the characters from Mayor’s Joe Gunther series. Willy Kunkle gets a call to say that his ex-wife has been found dead in her New York apartment, apparently from an accidental drug overdose. Although they haven’t spoken for a long time, Willy feels guilty because of his treatment of Mary in the past and heads off to New York to ID the body. He’s not sure that the death IS accidental and decides that the least he can do for Mary is find out the truth. I was intrigued by Willy, and found this a really good read. The sense of place is excellent.
