Val McDermid
Class/Genre:   Mystery
Series: Tony Hill # 3

Just when I think Val's written her best book, she goes out and tops it
the following book. No exception with this one, which concludes the Tony
Hill/Carol Jordan series (though I gotta say, the way it ends, I would
LOVE to see a fourth book someday in the future....).

Just fabulous. Part serial killer investigation, part undercover sting, and certainly furthers the tenuous and fragile relationship between Ton and Carol, TLT takes place in Germany and Holland and definitely has a more "epic" scope than the previous two books. The risks McDermid took in standalones like A PLACE OF EXECUTION and KILLING THE SHADOWS have truly paid off in spades here, and I loved it all.

Sometimes all a reader has to do is sit back, marvel at the crispness of the prose and the detailed characterization, and let the author do his or her magic. Definitely the case here with TLT.

It must be doing very well in Britain, but I bet it will do very, very well once it is released in the fall in North America, especially with the first two books getting rereleased in paperback by St. Martin's.
