When an author includes in his acknowledgements a large paragraph devoted to his dog, ya gotta love him.

Facing a difficult lawsuit that could ruin him professionally as well as financially, Anton Burns is becoming cynical about the justice system. As he waits for a resolution, he is sent to Laramie. His employer, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, has assigned him to investigate the death of a rock climber.

As a climber himself as well as having experience in the justice system, McKinzie writes a novel that flows effortlessly from cliff face to courtroom. The pace is fast, the writing intelligent. The book is filled with the flavor of todayıs west and with memorable characters including a dog named Oso.

In the past few years readers have been discovering some terrific new authors. This is one of the best. With two other books to quickly follow, count us lucky.
