The backdrop for Evan McNamara's debut novel, Superior Position, is the sleepy little tourist town of Dumont, Colorado, nestled in the valley of the Rio Grande River.
Whenever he's in a bind, Bill Tatum (a.k.a. Deputy Bill) former army sniper turned deputy sheriff, recalls the teachings of Sergeant Richter to help him decide his next move. He finds himself calling upon the expertise of his old sergeant again and again after he stumbles upon the body of Gayle Whippany, a reporter, on his daily run. Things quickly go south when another deputy is gunned down while they are trying to clear the crime scene. Deputy Bill soon realizes they are dealing with a skilled sniper and puts his own life on the line in his quest for a "superior position" from which to target the sniper who has only begun to kill.
The search for the sniper uncovers a lot of town secrets, and it soon becomes apparent that Deputy Bill has no idea whom he can trust - friend and foe alike, and that the motive for the killings is anything but clear.
This book is fast paced and exciting. The reader will be hard pressed to put it down. I'm already looking forward to Mr. McNamara's next novel!
