Class/Genre:   Mystery   Thriller
Vistatron; 2000; 298pp
Classification: Adult fiction (thriller)

Dr. Sean Collin is a geneticist who is diagnosed with an illness destroying all of his major organs. He and his staff come up with a plan to save his life, but nothing goes according to plan - as they are thrown into the world of criminal prosecution and Dr. Collin has to fight for his freedom.

'Human' is an interesting story, which clearly deals with a lot of science and genetic engineering. At times, the story becomes very complicated and despite the best efforts of McNamee to prevent this, it can become boring for the layman, however interested in scientific matters he may be. Along with the science, there are some complicated legal matters, but it all has the hallmarks of a researched, authentic work.

McNamee's characters are interesting and they work well. His insane Prosecutor is a particularly enjoyable creation and in fact, his characters are his strongest point, showing a particular talent for their invention. This is not to say that the other elements to the story are not as good, but since McNamee is broadening the terms of the scientific discourse with regard to cloning and organ transplant, this does strike the reader as somewhat unbelievable.

Overall, this is an interesting and enjoyable novel, but there are large scientific portions that could be off-putting to the casual reader.
