I usually read series in order but I have already read several of the later books in this series. I discovered that in this series, although there are later changes in employment, number and ages of the children it was easy to keep track of what was going on in the lives of regular characters at the moment. And it was kind of fun to discover characters that will later pop up in other mysteries were there from the beginning.

Many Christmas mysteries seem to me to be set in December but otherwise aren't really about Christmas. There is a lot of holiday spirit in this story. The murder takes place at a mail order company but its more than just that theme, there's all the regular "extras" that a wife and woring mother deal with every year during the holidays. Some of these themes carried over into her second Christmas mystery written later, and it was fun for this regular reader to see the connections.
