The Marche Mansion, a huge house with an odd history, has been presented as a museum to the town of Black Rain Corners on Chesapeake Bay. Psychoanalyst Dr. Avi Keppler has invited the newly formed Historical Society to his home for its first official meeting. Various members have joined the doctor and his extended family for dinner and the appraisal of a bejeweled key. Earlier a painting has disappeared from Marche House and the caretaker found dead. Now the key vanishes and another death occurs.

A number of interesting characters people this novel including a semi-retired cop and a cook-housekeeper known for her great meals and her fractured expressions. While the police investigate the crimes and Molly serves up good food and her Mollypropisms the historical society focuses on an earlier mystery connected to the Marche family.

This caper is full of surprises, a tale with love, hate, lust and greed. The Maryland background makes a good setting for the action. A promising first novel.
