Grant Reynolds is newly assigned to an arm of the American Embassy in Paris. His sector is actually staffed by the FBI, but with a carefully designed system of alternate job titles and multiple layers of responsibility. Reynolds is a former cop and also holds a law degree from Harvard. In one sense he is in flight from an unfortunate incident in his police career and hoping for a fresh start.

His first day in Paris begins with a jolt - two young Americans have been murdered, professional hit man style, and Grant's office is assigned to investigate the crime since American citizens are involved. He immediately finds a helpful colleague in his French counterpart. Very early in the investigation Reynolds recognizes the trademarks of an international assassin who had murdered several persons in the US. His knowledge of the killer's mode of murder gives him a high measure of respect and cooperation in the French authorities.

Mitcheltree does a very good job of presenting the investigation and tracking of the killer. This portion of the book is a very satisfying police procedural, with the added intrigues of conducting an investigation in a foreign country.

Less successful are Grant's relationships with two women, one a coworker and the other a beautiful attorney whose wealthy client may or may not be involved in the events.
