Class/Genre:   Mystery   Thriller
Series: Tom Reed and Walt Sydowski # 5

Mofina's series features San Francisco reporter Tom Reed and cop Walt Sydowski. In this entry - long time cop Cliff Hooper is found dead in his home, shot once in the head with his ID badge and service revolver prominently laid out on his body. From each of their respective responsibilities the two men begin to investigate the death, and follow an overlapping set of circumstances.

Before long another cop is dead - found in similar circumstances and attention begins to focus on a woman who had dated them both. Reed is also intriuged by her involvement, since she is a co worker of his, another reporter on the same newspaper.

At least one major red herring pops up in the parallel investigations, and the action involves informants living perilous lives in the drug culture of the city. We also learn the twisted mentality of the murderer through flashbacks to his youth.

I was suspicious of the person eventually unmasked as the killer in his first appearance of the story, and not really surprised at the eventual outcome.

All in all - a pleasant read in the so called "medium boiled" category of suspense fiction.
