If, when you think of “historical mysteries” you think of the “Napoleon and Josephine era,” or even further back; heck, is there any forensic evidence Cain killed Abel? Maybe you just picture another romantic retelling of the north v the south with a mystery thrown in? Fidelis Morgan will change your thinking regarding this mystery sub-genre, or at the very least you’ll love her historical mysteries.

“Unnatural Fire” introduces Anastasia Ashby de la Zouche, Baroness Penge, Countess of Clapham, and former mistress to King Charles II. Despite the fancy name, title and personal knowledge of the previous monarchy’s boudoir, the Countess has fallen on hard times. She finds herself working with her former maidservant (with whom she becomes reunited), Alpiew, as a journalist writing sensational and explicit stories for a London tabloid. They are then hired by a wealthy woman to obtain the identification of her husband’s mistress. While following the gentleman, they witness his murder, and set out to catch the murderer.

“Unnatural Fire” is a wild and hilarious ride through the world of alchemy, and into political deception. The characters are colorful, entertaining and lead us all over London and its area. We travel into prisons, the theater, London street life and into an apothecary’s shop. Occasionally joining the duo are the Countess’ groom/house servant, Godfrey, and her friend, Pigalle, who can cause as much trouble as assistance they provide.

Alpiew and the Countess are the two unlikeliest heroines, who will grab your attention and keep you riveted right up to the exciting finish. And then you want to see (read) much more of them in mystery adventures.

You may even forget you’re reading a historical mystery.
