Class/Genre: Fantasy Mystery Cats
Penguin; ©1992; $5.50; 418 pp.
At the bottom of artist Braden West's California garden is a door of rich dark wood, carved with beautifully stylized cats. On the other side of this magic portal lies the Netherworld -- a realm of shapeshifting Catswolders, human rebels, and their cruel enslaver, Siddonie, the sorceress queen. And Siddonie is searching for Melissa to complete her evil plans.
Melissa is coming back to reclaim her rightful crown and to liberate her people. From the shape of a beautiful woman and the guise of a calico cat, Melissa fights to regain her memory and stop Siddonie from enslaving all the Netherworld peoples/
This won't be my last Murphy book! She has an incredible ability to interweave two disparite worlds and her characterization of Melissa [sometime woman, sometime cat] rings true. More properly categorized as Romantic Fantasy, this has something for everyone, and it looks like Murphy has made the change from children's books to adult with a purr.
