Alex Winston runs the Hatteras West Inn, which is a replica of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and its outer buildings. It's not near the ocean. Instead, it's deep in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains. Elise Danton is the Inn's housekeeper and Alex’s confidant.
A few months ago a handful of gems were uncovered on the property. Emma Sturbridge, the resident gem expert, hasn't been able to locate the vein where the gems originated. Alex used most of the money from the sale of the emeralds to reconstruct the Main Keepers Quarters which had been burned to the ground earlier. Construction is not complete.
Elise has to go home for awhile as her father is ill. Emma takes Elise's place as the Inn's housekeeper while she is away.
Alex allows Shantara Robinson to tie her Golden Days Fair, a craft fair, in with the Lighthouse Lighting -- annual county-approved testing of the tower's beacon.
Jefferson Lee, a blacksmith at the fair, is found dead with a shaft of cold, black iron staking him to the new Main Keepers Quarters.
The other crafters become suspects. Alex helps Sheriff Armstrong uncover the identity of the killer. While Elise is away, Alex also has to deal with Jenny, a crafter at the fair and a former girlfriend.
Alex is a likeable character. I like the relationship he has with Elise, but hope it will grow. I think that's the only thing I would say negative about this book is that I missed that. With Elise gone, all he did was miss her, but yet he's not sure what type of relationship they have. There was too much of that in this book.
This series is very enjoyable. I always look forward to the next book coming out. The descriptions are very enticing. I would love to stay at The Hatteras West Inn.
I highly recommend this book and the whole series.
