Carrie McCrite has acquiesced to marrying Henry King. Planning a wedding, what can go wrong with that? Apparently everything. As Carrie begins her preparations, best friends, Eleanor and Shirley in tow, fretful concerns regarding lack of youth and fitness attack her. The suggestion of the Crescent Hotel for the wedding is made. Dubiously Carrie agrees, and then takes Henry on the trip through the Ozark Mountains to Eureka Springs to see the location. While there, in her “instantly befriend and nurture everyone way” Carrie is drawn to one of the family florists in town. Then later that evening, they witness them being shot at. Rather than return home and just continue with their wedding plans, our “veteran of life” lovebirds plunge in to do whatever help the family needs. As the wedding plans continue at the hotel Carrie witnesses a bombing, they “trip” over a murder victim, they “see” a ghost at least once or twice, and a couple of other exciting events that aren’t in the Chamber of Commerce’s booklet for Eureka Springs, AR.
Carrie McCrite and Henry King make a delightful, if not “too good” couple. They could be a little more “naughty”, maybe a little wine at dinner. Carrie’s “plunge ahead despite the danger” with Henry’s policeman’s wariness is a good combination. They work well together. The story is entertaining, and all the characters are vivid. A good read, and one you can safely give to your mother-in-law.
