Carrie McCrite and Henry King are getting married. Carrie wants a small but formal wedding, and Henry, who would be happy with a ceremony at the local courthouse, wants to please Carrie. Of course, even the smallest wedding can become complicated. Carrie begins to doubt the possibility of ever realizing her wedding hopes as she peruses bridal magazines, none of which feature plump, mature models - and that's before her enthusiastic friends seem set to take over the entire proceedings. For example, there's her friends' suggestion of the historic (and possibly haunted) Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas as a location for the ceremony....well, Carrie decides, it wouldn't actually hurt to take a quick trip to Eureka Springs to check the place out!

At the hotel, Carrie witnesses a nasty incident - due to racial prejudice, business rivalry or both? Before she can decide, the situation becomes extremely dangerous, and she and her friends must find out who is responsible for an escalating series of incidents.

This story combines a rather old-fashioned atmosphere with modern social issues, although the latter are sometimes dealt with in a rather heavyhanded manner. Nevertheless, the pleasant and sympathetic protaganists contribute to the overall charm of the story.

Although this is the first book I have read featuring Carrie McCrite, it is one in a continuing series. Based on this example, Nehring's other books should provide entertaining reading for lovers of cozies.
