Carrie McCrite, no spring chicken, wants her wedding to Henry King to be just right. She is concentrating on every detail and she’s getting a lot of advice from friends. She and her intended are, after all, quite a few years removed from giddy teenaged attitudes. In her unsuspicious naiveté, however, she’s invited some people to the gala who may not be the epitome of calm, respectful ordinary citizens.

She and Henry go off to Eureka Springs to finalize their arrangements with the hotel Carrie and her close girl friends have selected as a suitable venue. All seems calm and ordinary, but not for long. In no particular order an ethereal bride in a red dress shows up, florists are intimidated by what may not be errant random gunfire. Intense business competition involving physical intimidation breaks out and a bomb blast damages part of the hotel. That’s only the beginning. Murder too, stalks the corridors of the hostelry.

Carrie is no stranger to odd and unusual happenings, but these distractions from her main mission, to get married in a genteel and appropriate fashion, become progressively more difficult to ignore or resolve. And then, somebody locks her in a cooler. Naked, in a walk-in cooler.

The novel offers up a gentle humor combined with a sharply observant eye on the foibles of an interesting cast of characters that carries the story to an eminently satisfying conclusion. But with all these distractions, do Carrie and Henry successfully conclude their wedding vows? You’ll have to read the novel to answer that question.
