Reporter Annie Seymour has an apartment in Little Italy in New Haven, Connecticut. She grew up in the area so knows most of the residents, including the owners of Prego restaurant, which has burned down with a body inside. Working with longtime friend P. I. Vinny, ex-lover cop Tom, and, reluctantly, fellow reporter Dick Whitfield, life is complicated. Gambling, the Mob, and chickens all seem to play a part as Annie manages to alienate almost everyone she knows.

A variety of characters from dumpster diving Mario to mobsters to an animal-rights neighbor keep the story moving in unexpected ways. Early winter in New Haven means snow, and even the weather is making Annie¹s life difficult. The ending brings a surprise or two. All in all, a fun, fast moving tale.
