This is first in a Victorian era series featuring Kathryn Ardleigh American/Irish orphan and secret author of "penny dreadfuls." She is invited to England to be secretary to her Aunt. She is introduced to a neighbor Sir Charles Sheridan second son of Baron who is interested in the most up to date science at the turn of the last century. Soon Sir Charles is investigating a body found at a nearby archeological dig, and Kate is fascinated with his science interests while soaking up information for her fiction, and falling love.

This is great storytelling, imagery, background color. I also liked the quotes from literature at the beginning of each chapter which add the ambiance of the story.
