In my collecting of mystery books I have been picking up T. Jefferson Parker’s books right along. And I have to admit that I haven’t actually read one yet. I knew I would like them, that’s why I’ve been buying them. But this was the first of his that I’ve read. And I am very happy to know that I have a small stack of great books waiting for me. This was terrific.

The book opens with a phone call to a homicide detective, one Tom McMichael. He is being called in on the latest murder because he’s up next in rotation. However, there are some problems already. It turns out that Tom’s family and the victim have a history. And not a good one. McMichael feels he will be able to work the case, and that’s good enough for his boss. This leads us to the crime scene and the beginning of a puzzle we get to see solved. And it is pure joy to follow. The procedural aspects of the book are tight, the intuitions of the detectives logical and believable.

Parker also does a wonderful job with characters. These people took on a life of their own that went on in my head after I put down the book. (which was only twice). The plot drew me along like a fish on a hook and kept reeling me in. A few times along the way I was sure I had it figured out. And in the end, I was not even close. It kept me in suspense right up to the last page. A truly marvelous way to be introduced to one of my new favorite authors.
