Jeff Parker has another police procedural set in Southern California - this one in San Diego and involving a long standing family feud and the battering death of an elderly businessman. Tom McMichael is a member of one of the families involved in the feud and also a homicide cop assigned to investigate the murder. He is drawn into a mix of family jealousy, police misconduct, the exploitation of a brain damaged man connected to the case, the disapppearance of a prostitute who knew too much for her safety, an unscrupulous lawyer, a beautiful woman who may be the killer, and a startlingly unique smuggling ring.

As he investigates, the fires of an old romance are remembered in detail, if not reignited. He also strives to maintain a close supportive relationship with his young son, now living with McMichael's former wife and her new husband. Parker treats us to lots of twists and turns, and vivid descriptions of a Southern California winter rainstorm. Parker's sense of place in his native Southern California has always been one of the strengths of his books.
