Series: Spenser # 26
Putnam, Mar 1999, $22.95, 309 pp.

Hawk asks his friend Spenser to investigate the claim of Professor Robinson Nevins that the university unfairly denied him tenure. Robinson feels the academia blames him for the suicide death of a gay activist, who allegedly was Robinson's lover. Just after Hawk persuades Spenser to do him a favor, Dr. Susan Richman asks him for help. She wants Spenser to look into who is stalking Susan's friend K.C. Roth.

Not wanting either case, Spenser begins to dig into both of them. He soon finds himself buried in a quagmire of misinformation, prejudice and danger from campus bullies. He easily resolves the Roth case, but his client becomes infatuated with him. He tries to put a halt to the attentions of K.C., but soon she becomes a predator stalking Spenser.

After twenty-five years, one would think Spenser would have dried up by now. However, Spenser remains fresh and fun to read. Though not a heavyweight, the current novel, HUSH MONEY, is a typical Spenser tale as the hero fights for what he believes is right. Fans of the series will welcome Robert B. Parker's latest entry in his long running series.
