David Hayes embezzled seventeen million dollars from the bank that employs Boldt's wife after his affair with Boldt's wife ended. The affair almost ended the Boldt's marriage, but they have managed to put their marriage back together. Hayes was caught, convicted, and sentenced, but the money was never recovered. Now Hayes is out and the bank, the police and the Russian mob, all want the money.
Hayes contacts Liz about accessing the bank's mainframe, but she goes to Lou with the information. Boldt needs to find Hayes and the money, but the Russian mob wants it and they are willing to threaten Boldt's family to get it. The bank wants the money. The police want the money and there are several of them Boldt is no longer sure of. What he DOES know is that his family's welfare and safety are not as important to any of them as it is to him . . . and he may have to sacrifice his career to keep them alive.
In addition to being an incredibly complex police procedural thriller, "The Body of David Hayes" turns a compelling spotlight on the complexities of a marriage when it is threatened from the outside and on the levels of trust that can exist between people both inside and outside that bond.
I'm ashamed to admit that this is my first Boldt novel. Now it seems I have an incredible backlist to read. While it could easily be read as a stand-alone, I for one will be looking to catch up with a very gifted writer and all of his series!
