One of Pearson's continuing characters, Seattle cop Lou Boldt, returns in a story which strains the fabric of his marriage and threatens the physical safety of his entire family. Several years before the book opens, a Seattle bank has lost $17 million dollars in a masterful embezzlement. David Hayes, the perpetrator was sentenced to prison, but the funds were never recovered.
Now free on parole, Hayes seeks assistance from his former lover, an officer of the bank, who also happens to be the wife of the protagonist Lou Boldt.
What follows is a tense battle between Boldt, the master thief who now wants his cash, Hayes the embezzler, several other Seattle cops who may or may not be on the take from the mastermind, and Boldts wife perilously involved all aspects of the hunt for the funds since she alone has access to the various electronic passwords and computer security programs which are needed to release the money from limbo.
An enjoyable tense read, especially as Boldt strives to protect his wife's safety and reputation, while persuing the thief.
