The novella 'The Tunnel at the End of the Light' is one of a series focussing on the time travel adventures of Honore and Emily. Honore and Emily have special abilities with respect to time, and together they can, under certain conditions, travel through time. This plot device provides a more interesting for time travel than the perhaps more usual time travel machine. The limitations - the reasons Honore and Emily can't simply zip back in time and fix things every time they have a problem - are worked into the story well.

The darkness, grime and shortages of post-war London described evocatively. There is a lack of depth to the story, but this may be a limitation of the novella. The 'Subterraeans', for example, are simply there, and their origin and actions are not always convincing, possibly because there is not sufficient space in a novella to develop them. This is an entertaining story, but one with some weaknesses.
