Sometimes I think Richard Dain and his daughters, who operate a successful law firm in Pinnacle Peak Arizona, have so much turmoil in their family that it would be impossible for them to get any lawyering done. In this, the fourth Hannah Dain novel, our protagonist is engaged in multi- tasking with serious consequences in several directions.
She's been following twisty trails to find new relatives she never knew she had, trying to avoid rocking her older sister Shelby's rehab boat, maintain her physical regimen, and try to live up to her self-imposed ban on personal crime fighting. Most of these tasks, she handles with aplomb but since all of them involve other people who tend to act independently, Hannah is often beset by problems not of her own making.
The main thrust of FALSE FORTUNE begins when Hannah agrees to assist her sister Shelby in prepping for the settlement of a case between a local Indian tribe and the federal government. Back in the day, the feds polluted some reservation land with uranium mining and they've agreed to a payout. Shelby and Hannah need some video footage of the old mines so they set out for the reservation. On the way Hannah has to rescue a woman from drowning. That inadvertent contact and the woman's subsequent mysterious disappearance peaks Hannah's curiosity about the terms of the pending settlement. Naturally she raises questions, questions which lead to the discovery of murder, a possible treasure map, a raft of exciting incidents and some new and interesting characters. And let's not forget about Hannah's expanding family.
Smoothly written, evocatively described, Hannah Dain's life and loves are an enjoyable reading experience, one I will look forward to again.
