The Ivan Monk series is set in LA featuring an black PI. The series is wonderful and gives a look at the grittier side of the city of angles. In Bad Night Falling, Ivan is hired to investigate a firebombing murder in an apartment complex. The apartments are home to lower income families and mixed races. This is a catalyst for trouble because no ones seems to trust any one else. After a very short time Ivan is fired by the security company who patrols the buildings. But Ivan is already drawn into the case. And the case is definitely intriguing. The investigation has Ivan researching back in time and discovering some unpleasant things.

The book is paced like a blues song with a steady tempo that slowly builds. The side story with Ivan’s girl freind is also very well done. The portrait of La that this book paints is a little dark, and a little dismal, but beautiful.
