Series: Ivan Monk # 2
Berkley Paperback; 1995

Ivan Monk is a private eye in LA. In the first book of the series he was hired to find out who killed a Korean shop owner. He was hired because he is an African American and hiring him made the people happy. In this, his second book, Ivan takes a case to track down the killer of a street hustler. He is hired by the young man’s girlfriend, against the wishes of her mother. The case quickly starts to take a turn for the worse when he discovers a plot to kill young black men. It eventually leads him north to a small town in Oregon, and there seems to be something major brewing .

Gary Phillips has created a great character in Ivan Monk. Street wise, smart, and likable. A hardboiled detective wonderfully done. And the knowledge of LA shines through. Gary writes a tight story, and it reads quite believable. Since finishing this book I have picked up everything I can find by Phillips.
