Finished this the other day and all I can say is what a nice read!
I started it about 6 months ago and read the first 50 pages or so, then flipped to the front cover to read just *what* in the heck this story was all about. The gist of the blurb on the cover was 'The story of one man's trip out of town for the last time.'
And yeah, that's the gist of the story.
I picked it up again after a few months and read a few more pages, then put it down because something more interesting came along.
So, after not being in the mood for anything else in my bedside stack, I picked it up yet again, thinking *someone* on rgo gave this a big thumbs up so it freaking well better be good.
BLAMMO!!!
Wow!! I was just about to put it down *yet again* when all hell breaks loose and the story starts to move. Not that it wasn't moving already, just not in a 'mystery' vein. There was alot of weird characters and funny situations, and comments on life in America today but lets face it, I read books for the gore. Where's the body? I need a body by page 3 or fergiddaboudit.
To say anything more really constitutes spoilers. This is a book unlike any other. Very convoluted, takes a while to start if your tastes are as shallow as mine, and half the time you wonder what the *f* is happening here - does that sound like one of those 'shaggy dog' stories?? Probably, but the ending is worth the travel, or whatever the bumperstickers say (LOL!!)
But well worth the effort. And you *will* feel cold, the writing does make you feel the winter.
Thank you to whoever recommended this book, and I'll never doubt you again.
