We return to Tetumka, Oklahoma in Song of the Bones. Chantalene has finally made a place for herself after a difficult childhood in Tetumka and an unwelcome return when she was out to find her father’s killers. She is now back attending college and working as an assistant to Drew Sander, Tetumka’s new lawyer who has set up shop mainly doing tax returns. He is also Chantalene’s boyfriend.
In this second Chantalene book, the Tetumka Postmistress and Chantelene’s foster aunt Thelma hires Drew to try to find her long lost husband Billy Ray Patterson or have him declared dead. Billy Ray and Thelma were married for a short period of time thirty years ago when he left on a trip and never returned. She needs his name off the deed to her property, as an oil company wants to lease her land. Billy Ray magically appears after all these years but although the town folks believe it is him, Thelma is sure that this is not her husband. If this man is not her long lost husband than who is this man that she has let back into her life and home?
At the same time Chantalene is having nightmares of a girl she has never met and begins to believe someone is stalking her. She notices items missing in her home and is positive someone has been in it.
I believe this story was even better than the first book, Perhaps She’ll Die. M.K. Preston really gives you a feel for the characters and the setting. I look forward to future adventures with Chantalene.
