This, too, I read in one sitting. It's about a serial killer investigation, but not really--it's more about a young woman, Debbie Sykes, who's living in a smallish town teaching at a college. One night she's waiting for the train and gets a weird vibe from something--maybe she's glimpsed a man, but all she sees is a shadow. It turns out she might have glimpsed the killer, and may be his next victim. Debbie is young but she's had a few knocks, and she doesn't want to let the inherent fear get the best of her. There are other gut-wrenching characters, like Rob Neave. He's an ex-copper turned security guard at the college with a horrific past and who might be falling for Debbie. They have tremendous chemistry and I rooted for them the entire time. The writing too is superb. My favorite scene was when Debbie tries to teach her students the meaning of horror and suspense by quoting Shirley Jackson. The horror's in what you can imagine, she tells them. And that's carried off perfectly in a later scene and in the rest of the book. Truly, a wonderful psychological thriller. I had also very much enjoyed SILENT PLAYGROUDS/LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS and have book #3 NIGHT ANGELS in the TBR.
