Class/Genre: Fantasy
This "fable of fame, fortune, & self-discovery" follows Phoenix, a phoenix who intends to find fame and fortune by seeking priceless pearls he saw in a dream. On the way to starting his voyage, he leaves behind his many animal friends when he gets caught up in "The Rocks", a thinly veiled corporate headquarters where The Vultures trap animals and set them to work on "Hollowstone computers" and "Acacia wood" phones. Once the creatures have "burned out", they are sent to Dark Valley, from which they never return. As the story progresses, Phoenix learns more about himself and the world around him, only to discover that fame and fortune are not the most important goals for a phoenix.
It is unclear to me who the intended audience for this 95-page book with large type is. The vocabulary is too hard for children, and the social commentary would go over the heads of most. It is too vague to be very hard-hitting as political satire. As a self-help book it leaves much to be desired and little to be learned.
