Lestat lies in a state of either permanent death or in some sort of comatose condition as Vampires from around the world watch. David Talbot asks Armand about his life. Armand begins his personal tale with his childhood in Kiev and ultimately fifteenth century Constantinople. He was a mortal sold as a boy toy to Marius, a Venetian painter, who happened to be a vampire.
Soon after that, he receives the gift of the dark. His haven within Marius' palazzo is destroyed by fellow vampires, killing in the name of God. However, Armand escapes and his escapades continue in nineteenth century Paris and twentieth century New Orleans.
Novels like THE VAMPIRE ARMAND are what made and continues to make Anne Rice a household name. The author, who subtly switches the tone when Armand is converted to Vampirism and anytime a new era is introduced, brilliantly describes Armand's story. This is Ms. Rice's best novel in several years as she stays with what she does best: the eternal dilemma of the vampire between his/her immortality and his/her soul. The grandmaster has returned to reclaim her throne as the leading light (dark?) of the vampire tale.
