South Town is the fifth book in Riordan’s Tres Navarre series. Tres has had trouble in the past deciding if he wants to teach or be a PI, ups and downs in his relationships and a family that is just a little weird.

With this book Riordan firms up some of the ups and downs and with its conclusion we have a character who has made some decisions about who he is and where he’s going.

Getting there is no easy path however. The book opens with a prison break and the return of part of his employer’s past that she would rather stayed out of sight. Will Stirman was in prison for some pretty bad things, and when he gets out, he wants payback for being put in prison. Erainya, Tres’ boss is one of his targets. And so Tres gets drawn into Stirman’s path and the destruction that goes with it.

Rick Riordan’s book have entertained me from the first. I think his skills as a story teller have improved with every book. So it’s no surprise to me that this book is my favorite by him, at least so far. He has a wonderful pace set in this book and it moves quick. The characters are not all straight up good or bad, just as in real life we have shades of gray. I also personally can identify with Tres’ psychotic cat, who like my own seems to think everything revolves around him. And while it’s a minor par of the book, it’s touches like this that make Riordan’s books easy to read and identify with.

Another wonderful book from a great writer.
